The UCD School of Agriculture and Food Science celebrated its annual awards ceremony in the UCD O'Brien Centre for Science on November 16th, with 37 students and recent graduates receiving prizes based on the 2016/17 academic session.

2017 was both an interesting and challenging year in equal measure. On the one hand, inclement weather along the western seaboard has led to many having to house cattle early with consequential fodder shortages. On the other hand, 2017 has been a relatively positive year overall with increased output prices combining with stable input prices to deliver improved returns across many sectors. The relative uplift however is very much dependent on the farm sector engaged and indeed the level of on-farm efficiency discusses Liam Phelan, AIB Agri Advisor.

Life as a New Entrant – Lessons along the way

Louise Crowley, Croom, Co. Limerick decided in 4th year in secondary school, that even though her father was still relatively young and the business very reliant on long-term leases, dairying was the career for her. Now farming alongside her dad, Louise is after buying 72 acres and is currently milking 150 cows, with 170 cows to pass through the parlour next year. Here are some key insights from Louise’s journey to date which may be useful for other young farmers as they embarking on a career in agriculture.
